Job Title: Engineering Technician

Pay Grade: 8-10 (Depending on Experience)

Position Summary:
To perform all necessary functions to inspect, install, repair, test, and maintain all substations, metering points, SCADA, and all other transmission and distribution equipment to best provide system improvement and reliability. Assist in Engineering projects. Stake and troubleshoot overhead and underground distribution line. Regular attendance during normal business hours. May be called out for outages.

External Relationships: Members and general public

Essential Functions of the Job:
Depending on Experience - Assists in system analysis which will include computing short circuit currents, device coordination, and current data, maps, and recommending devices changes, strategies, and best practices to assure acceptable reliability standards. Perform regularly scheduled tests and preventative maintenance on substation equipment including circuit switchers, circuit breakers, MOS, and electronic reclosers. Analyze test results and makes repairs or changes as needed regarding the processors, transceivers, fiber optic cabling and wiring that is associated with relay, control and SCADA functions in substations and on the distribution lines. Prepare any necessary staking sheets and obtain permits. Analyze outage data from OMS and submits recommendations regarding necessary corrective action to meet reliability standards. Designs, install, program, commissions, troubleshoot, and maintain the substation and down line automation relaying, controls, equipment, and the associated circuits and wiring. Assists in and develops written procedures, standards, test reports and associated documentation related to the installation, commissioning, calibrating, testing and maintenance of all relay, control and SCADA equipment. Reads and interprets technical manuals, blue prints, diagrams and electronic schematics associated with protection and communication schemes; directs others as needed in the use of these items.

Training and Experience - Mechanical, electrical, design or surveying background preferred. Previous electric utility experience in operations/engineering or with a consulting firm working for electric utilities preferred. Electric line construction or design experience is preferred. Previous experience in the areas of computer applications and mapping helpful. First Class Lineman or equivalent is preferred.
Knowledge - Knowledge of personal computer applications including database, excel, word, and electric system modeling. Prefer a general working knowledge of system protection coordination principles and computer-aided drafting. Prefer a general knowledge of electric utility engineering practices, operations and construction. Prefer a general knowledge of standard utility specifications and the National Electric Safety Code.
Abilities and Skills - Must be organized, detail-orientated, able to concentrate, plan work projects, and skilled in communicating with people. Must be able to express him/herself well orally and in technical writing projects. Must be able to present information to others. Must be skilled in the use of office equipment such as a copier, computer and printer. Must be able to read, write and do arithmetic. Must be familiar with algebraic and trigonometric functions and be able to apply their use to utility design and engineering problems. Must pass physical exam initially; drug/controlled substance screening test randomly.
Transportation and Driver’s License - Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work. Has and maintains a Texas driver’s license with a good driving record and insurable under the standard rate of the current carrier.
