JOB POSTING JANUARY 22, 2018 Job Assignment: ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER Job Number: 06-0840 Department: 06 - Police Pay: $2,235.00 per month / $12.89 per hour Title of Immediate Supervisor: Special Services Division Lieutenant GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for carrying out tasks required to enforce animal and rabies control and licensing regulations. Patrols city areas to pick up stray animals, reptiles, unlicensed dogs and dead animals. EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED: 1) Routine patrol in assigned vehicle, to pick up dead animals, stray animals, reptiles and unlicensed dogs; 2) Enforce ordinances governing animal control; 3) Investigate complaints that dogs or other animals are creating a nuisance; 4) Answer questions regarding the licensing and disposal of animals; 5) Assist with rabies control work; 6) Stay in contact with Police Department and Animal Shelter personnel using two-way radio communication; and laptop computer for additional calls or complaints; 7) Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoor and outdoor work, both pleasant and unpleasant. Exposed to possibly diseased and dangerous animals; hazards involve picking up stray animals and reptiles. Ability to sit, stand and drive a vehicle to and from various worksites. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while performing maintenance duties and be exposed to mechanical and chemical hazards. Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and 50-75 pounds occasionally. Ability to bend, stoop, walk, push brooms, sweep, and dig. Ability to walk over sloped and uneven terrain. Work involves getting dirty and wet. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, noises, fumes and odors. Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with the public. Ability to understand verbal and written communication. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Occasional contact with other employees; frequent contact with the general public. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Prefer high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate; some experience working with animals; on-the-job training will be provided. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of care and handling of animals, animal regulations, investigation and inspection procedures, and laws governing same; skill to drive vehicle and patrol area and detect animal problems at same time in a safe manner; must have a good driving record; ability to communicate and work with the general public; ability to diffuse potentially hostile individuals; ability to read and interpret ordinances and regulations governing animal control; physical ability to perform job. Knowledge of computers and ability to write computerized reports. Ability to present cases to a magistrate for seizure of animals. REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Class C Texas Driver License; Successful completion of a Basic Animal Control Course or equivalent within one year of hire if not already licensed. ***Interested in this job?
